EPILOGUE

THE LITTLE CHURCH was filled with flowers. But the guests were few and very select.

The Barcourts—with Giles’s mother and sister looking particularly satisfied with events—occupied the front pew, and on the other side the vicar’s wife sat with Mr and Mrs Hughes and Nanny Ruth.

As Christine progressed slowly up the nave, her pale lavender gown emphasising her slender beauty, she was followed by Nicky, holding her short train. He was followed by Isabel Barcourt’s daughter as flower girl.

At the altar rail stood Anatole, waiting for his bride. As she reached him Christine smiled, turning to beckon Nicky to stand beside her. The vicar, his expression benign, began the service.

In Anatole’s head Christine’s words echoed. ‘You would know it…’

And now he did. He knew the power of love—the power that had brought him here, to this moment, where the woman he loved and the child he loved would be his for all eternity—as he was theirs.

Gravely he spoke the words that would unite them, heard Christine’s clear voice echoing, until his ring was on her finger and hers on his.

‘You may kiss the bride.’ The vicar smiled.

She lifted her face to Anatole—to her husband, the man she loved. She let their mouths touch, exchanging their love. And then, with a graceful dip of her knees, she lifted Nicky. Anatole took him from her, hefting him effortlessly into the crook of his arm, and they both turned round.

The organ music surged, the bells pealed out, and the congregation burst into applause as the flower girl threw rose petals over them. Laughing and smiling, the three of them—husband and wife, mother and father and precious son—headed down the aisle and out into the golden sunshine of their lives beyond.
